08 aug THE ART OF LANDING ON MADEIRA AIRPORT
Continuous strong winds are causing chaos on Madeira airport. Since Saturday, 20.000 tourists have stranded on the island. While departing travelers are forced to spend the night at the airport, arriving planes are circling above Madeira because strong winds are interfering with a successful landing. Not really the best way to start or end your vacation!
A CHALLENGING LANDING
Madeira airport is part of about every list of ‘world’s most dangerous’ airports, which is a dubious honor at best! The airport is surrounded by the ocean on one side and high mountains on the other. In extreme weather conditions, these characteristics make a successful landing a difficult task. In addition, the runway is on the short side. Because of these problems, pilots require special training before they are allowed to fly to Madeira. 
However, in peaceful weather conditions, you’ll be on the ground before you know it. No problem at all! And when there is a strong wind, just have faith in the special training of the pilots. They are experienced and absolutely will be able to get the plane to land safely.

We are traveling to Madeira next week, for more hiking, canyoning, and other fun activities! Let’s hope the wind has died down by then. If not, we might be in for a landing quite like the ones in the video below.
